Man bags 3 months for stealing MTN generator battery

An Enugu Magistrates’ Court on Monday sentenced one Friday Eze, 24, of Enugu North Local Government Area to three months imprisonment for stealing an MTN generator battery.
In her judgment, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs  Ifeoma Oruruo, said the convict understood the charge read to him and pleaded guilty to the one count charge brought against him.
Oruruo said that the confession made by the convict at the Central Police Station, Enugu, confirmed that he committed the offence as he equally pleaded for leniency.
According to her, the offence ordinarily attracts 14 years imprisonment “but because you pleaded guilty and asked for leniency, there must be a balanced justice while condemning the act”.
The magistrate, therefore, sentenced the accused to three months imprisonment with an option to pay the sum of N30, 000.
The police prosecutor, ASP Kwe-Kwe Ajor, had earlier told the court that the matter was reported to the Central Police Station on July 27, 2014 by an official of the MTN, Kingsley Okafor.
Ajor said that the convict broke into the MTN mast at Udi, near Enugu, and stole the generator battery at about three a.m.in the morning of the fateful day.
He said that when the convict was arrested, he pleaded with the police, saying that it was first time of stealing. (NAN)

Terry G: Singer's Pure Water Business Is Booming

Terry G's pure water is now the most lucrative venture the singer has tried his hands on.
When the Free Madness crooner, Terry G, whose real name is Gabriel Amanyi, revealed that he is set to go into another business venture, precisely the ever lucrative sachet water business, popularly called pure water, many thought he was not serious.
Lots of his fans questioned the wisdom in investing in such a venture which they think is well below his status but the Akpako master trudged on and put things in place for the business to be a succcess.
Today, those who live in the Iju, Ishaga, Akute, Ajuwon and Agbado axis, all in the outskirts of Lagos, can attest to the fact that Terry G Water is one of the fastest growing business, maybe due to the popularity of the owner or the fact that such a business venture is always a sure bet.
Terry G Water trucks are all over the place and is gradually taking over the pure water business in that axis.

Boko Haram 15 Soldiers Imprisoned For Refusing To Fight

The soldiers were reportedly sentenced to spend 4 years each in prison for refusing to join the fight against Boko Haram
According to reports, 15 soldiers of the Nigerian Army have each been sentenced to 4 years imprisonment for refusing to go to battle against terrorist sect, Boko Haram.
The soldiers, attached to the 23rd Armoured Brigade in Yola, Adamawa state, were detained for three weeks before they were sentenced by a court martial on charges of insubordination, Leadership reports.
A senior military officer reportedly confirmed the verdict saying:
“The soldiers had allegedly refused the orders of their superiors to draft back to the theatre of war.
“In the military tradition, a soldier is expected to obey the last order but the 15 soldiers convicted by the military command were adjudged to have committed acts of insubordination by their refusal to draft to the warfront.”
This comes after 12 soldiers were sentenced to death for mutiny after they attacked and shot their commander in Borno state.

Malala's attackers arrested

The Taliban gunmen who tried to kill Pakistani schoolgirl campaigner Malala Yousafzai in the country's restive northwest two years ago have been arrested, the army said on Friday.
Militants boarded the teenage activist's school bus and shot her in the head in October 2012 for her outspoken views on girls' education, in an attack that also wounded two of her friends.
Malala survived and went on to earn international plaudits for her courageous and determined fight for all children to have the right to go to school.
The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed the attack almost immediately but no arrests have been announced until now.
The detention of the 10 suspects involved the army, police and intelligence agencies and was part of the Pakistani military's ongoing offensive against the TTP and other extremist outfits.
"The group involved in the attack on Malala Yousafzai has been arrested," Major General Asim Bajwa told a news conference.
The group had a hitlist of 22 targets in addition to Malala, all ordered by the TTP's current leader Maulana Fazlullah, Bajwa said.
All its members were from Malakand, close to Mingora, the main town of Swat where Malala was attacked, he said. The leader Zafar Iqbal ran a furniture shop.
A spokesperson for the TTP's new hardline Jamat-ul-Ahrar faction Ehsanullah Ehsan denied the military's claims.
"Three people were involved in that attack, one of them is martyred and two are alive," Ehsan said in a statement.

After narrowly surviving the murder bid - one bullet grazed her brain and passed through her neck before lodging in her shoulder - Malala was taken to Britain with her family for treatment, where she now lives.
The TTP have said they will try again to kill her if she ever returns to Pakistan.
Her courageous recovery has made her a global figure - she won the EU's prestigious Sakharov human rights prize last year and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
An address she gave to the United Nations General Assembly in July last year, in which she vowed she would never be silenced, earned her a standing ovation.
Malala first rose to prominence in 2009, aged just 11, with a blog for the BBC Urdu service chronicling life under Taliban rule in Swat, the beautiful valley in northwestern Pakistan where she lived.
She had become well-known in Pakistan as a young campaigner for girls' right to attend school after the Taliban took control of Swat in 2007, speaking out against the militants' ban on female education and their bombing of local schools.
Under the Islamist militants' bloody rule, opponents were murdered, people were publicly flogged for supposed breaches of sharia law, women were banned from going to markets -- and girls were stopped from going to school.

Invest in education

In her autobiography published last year, Malala described receiving death threats in the months before the attack.
"At night I would wait until everyone was asleep," she writes. "Then I'd check every single door and window."
Now living in Britain's second city Birmingham, where she was flown for specialist treatment after the shooting, Malala also spoke in the book of her homesickness and her struggle to adjust to life in England.
A competitive schoolgirl who loves to be top of the class, the book revealed she is a fan of Canadian pop sensation Justin Bieber and the Twilight series of vampire romance novels.
But it is for her education campaigning that the 17-year-old is best known.
Accepting the Sakharov prize last year, she urged politicians to cut military spending and invest instead in education to create "a country with a talented, educated and skilful people"

Police collect bodies of Indian flood victims

Authorities in Indian Kashmir collected bodies floating in the streets on Thursday as anger mounted over what many survivors said was a bungled operation to help those caught in the region’s worst flooding in 50 years,Reuters reports.
Both the Indian and Pakistan sides of the disputed Himalayan region have been hit by extensive flooding in recent days, and about 450 people have been killed, with Indian Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar particularly hard hit.
“Some air force officials have reported that they have seen bodies of women and children floating. We are making every effort to collect the bodies as soon as we can,” said Srinagar police officer Faizal Wani.
He later said police dragged the bodies of three men, including a news photographer, from the water near the center of the city famed for its lakes and mountain views.
The ferocity of the floods appeared to have caught the administration in Indian Kashmir by surprise and has prompted an outpouring of anger in a Muslim-majority region where a 25-year-old revolt against Indian rule simmers.
In Pakistan, the death toll climbed to 257 and more than half a million people have been affected by the floods, with large tracts of farmland inundated and houses swept away.
“I do not know how and from where the floods came from. It came so suddenly that even our experts were caught unaware,” Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said during a visit to Haveli, one of the worst-affected areas in Pakistani Kashmir.
In Srinagar, Wani said the army and state officials were moving survivors to field hospitals and relief camps on higher grounds. Nearly 100,000 people have been rescued by the military in the past week, many of them by helicopter.
Police said some Srinagar residents had been trapped in the top floors of their homes since the Jhelum river, swollen by unusually heavy rain, surged higher last week. The river flows from Indian Kashmir to the Pakistan side, and then down into Pakistan’s lower Indus river basin.
Officials say 220 people have been killed in Srinagar, a city of about 1 million people. City police officer Altaf Khan cited reports of bodies trapped beneath debris but said the scale of the disaster would only become clear once the water receded.
The Indian army has deployed about 30,000 troops for rescue and relief operations and soldiers distributed 224,000 liters of water and food to survivors. In a gesture of solidarity, staff at the Indian prime minister’s office gave up one day’s salary for flood relief.
Many people praised the army on social media for its efforts but others vented their anger at delays in getting help to survivors.
Basharat Peer, a journalist and author of a book on the Kashmir conflict, who is working as a volunteer in Srinagar, said the response to the disaster had been woeful.
“It is clear case of mismanagement. Why are the basic supplies still not made available?” Peer asked.
“There are thousands of people searching for their families They have no idea whether they are alive or dead. We have no clean drinking water, no medicines and food to feed the children,” he said.
Indian authorities in New Delhi said they had been overwhelmed by the flooding. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be conducting an emergency meeting to assess the disaster.
“We are just shocked to see how our paradise has been destroyed. Proper assessment of the disaster is yet to begin,” a senior interior ministry official in New Delhi said of Kashmir.
Pakistan’s heavily populated Punjab province was among the worst affected, with military helicopters evacuating thousands of people from the banks of the overflowing Chenab river.
In the city of Jhang, large swathes of land was under water on Thursday, with many residents refusing to leave for fear of losing their property, a Reuters reporter at the scene said

Arsenal wouldn’t sell me to a rival for €20m -Wilshere

Jack Wilshere claims Arsenal would not sell him to a major rival for €20 million (£16m), after the Gunners signed Danny Welbeck from Manchester United.
Louis van Gaal claimed on Thursday that Welbeck was allowed to leave Old Trafford because he did not prove his worth alongside the likes of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney, with the Gunners snapping up the England international on transfer deadline day.
Former United defender Gary Neville subsequently criticised United’s decision to sell the star – who scored a brace against Switzerland in the Three Lions’ opening Euro 2016 qualifier – and Wilshere does not believe the Gunners would let him leave so easily.
“Gary Neville knows what he’s talking about. He probably said what he said because Danny’s a Manchester United boy, he grew up there,” he is quoted as saying by The Independent. “It’s a bit like Arsenal letting me go for £16m. It probably won’t happen.
“In today’s market £16m is nothing really. With the quality Danny’s got, we have a bargain.
“There are not many players that leave one top club for another in England, especially English players. It’s unheard of really.
“Danny can make the difference for Arsenal this season. He has great quality and will be good for us.”
Wilshere is also determined to block out his critics, following accusations that he has failed to progress as expected in recent years, with the midfielder claiming that he only listens to coaches and managers that he trusts.
“I know the people who are going to help me in my career and who has an influence on me – the boss [Arsene Wenger] and a few coaches who I respect,” he added. “Everyone else can say what they want – I won’t listen to them.
“I think age is an easy excuse and I will never use it. You know, I’ve been around for a while now, it’s six years since I made my debut. In a normal career that would be 20 years, but football is a short career. I’m feeling good, fully fit and raring to go.
“When I was younger, I’d look at the criticism and when you have a bad game it gets on top of you. But in football you play every three days so there is always a time to put it right.

Shocking: Liberian Woman Commits Suicide In Lagos

The woman was said to have fallen ill but she got no care due to Ebola fears
According to reports, a Liberian woman has committed suicide on Bankole Street in the Isheri-Oke area of Lagos.
Punch reports that the resident of the area were thrown into confusion when they saw the woman hanging from a tree.
The deceased, was identified simply as Kate, and was said to be a worker in a pure water factory before her death.
Residents told Punch that the woman had been sick for a while but fear of Ebola, which was brought into Nigeria by Liberian, Patrick Sawyer, made people stay away from her.
One of the residents said:
“We see her in this neighbourhood every day. She always looked sick but people stopped selling to her after the Ebola outbreak. It could be because she was Liberian and looked sickly. This might have frustrated her.”
Another resident said:
“She attended a church in the area and her church members still saw her yesterday. I used to see her every day in the dress she died in. She was sick and people in this area had avoided her, especially after the Ebola outbreak.”

The incident is said to have been reported to the Isheri Police Division.
